EWGA can help accomplish your 2010 resolutions

Image One of the most popular New Year resolutions is to "get in shape," "lose weight," or something that involves better health. Perhaps some of us are also listing "play better golf" or "play more golf." Well your EWGA-NNJ Chapter can help you succeed in accomplishing those goals. If you can join us on January 21 at our Annual Meeting, our guest from Paramus Golf Course, Maddie Cassano, will speak to us about golf fitness in the off-season. Don't worry if you miss it, I will share some of the info here.

An article in Golf Fitness Magazine suggests 20 minutes of physical preparation each day to give us the strength, endurance and power needed to get in shape for golf. Balance-ball yoga exercises are suggested that increase strength and flexibility of the lumbar spine, increase shoulder turn, and build core strength for more consistency. If Maddy agrees we'll post some of the exercises next month.

If you need encouragement to decrease your handicap, EWGA National is rolling out an inaugural event in our back yard this summer at Black Bear and Ballyowen on July 31 and August 1. You must have a handicap of 25 or less to compete in this Match Play Event. Chapters as far south as Baltimore and north to Boston will be combined into teams of 16 players each. I sent out a flyer about the event and as more info becomes available, I'll share. So keep checking the emails we send and visit the web site from time to time to keep informed.

To help us play more golf, our League Coordinators, Carol and Lois, are working diligently to add a couple of new courses and possibly another daytime league. No promises yet, as contracts are not signed, but we can promise there will be plenty to choose from come Spring! Our Events Chair, Mychel, is also getting contracts aligned for our weekend events.  We'll have plenty of variety for these events too! Rosa, our Social Chair is ready to get us together to socialize without the frustration of the little white ball. Brooke, our Education Chair, is lining up lessons to remove the rust for current players and exciting New-to-Golf programs to encourage more women to come into the fold. Please don't think we are dormant during the winter, we are working behind the scenes to ensure an exciting 2010 golf season. When your renewal reminder arrives, don't delay; you'll want to be part of the golf festivities this year.

I feel I would be remiss if I didn't mention Tiger Woods. Many people that know I love the sport want to engage me in conversation about this ugly story that unfolded recently. My response: I'm disappointed that a scarlet letter has been bestowed upon the sport by the world's best player! Golf is an honest person's game; too bad its best player was honest on the course but forgot to carry this virtue off the course.
